What do the people at home actually want to know?
Two things: where are you, and are you okay. Everything else is nice to have. A follower page answers both in the first five seconds: last seen near a named place, a check-in with a time, and a dot on the route.
Do my family need to install anything?
No. The link opens in any browser, on any phone, with no account. If they want a daily message rather than checking the page, they can add their email at the bottom of it.
How much of my position do they see?
That is your choice, per trail. The default rounds your position to the nearest kilometre along the route. You can show the exact point, or only which leg you are on, and you can add a delay of a few hours if you would rather people saw where you were than where you are.
